This is a theory course suitable for the complete beginner to boating be it sail, motor, personal watercraft or fishing, as well as the experienced dinghy and keelboat sailors who need a refresher on Navigation.

It is the ideal step for those who do not wish to be skipper but would like to take a more active role in the running of the boat.

The theory course is based on 16 hours teaching time with assessment throughout the course. There is a chart to use which is situated in a fictional cruising ground along with a CD of a chart plotter to give a taster into the electronic navigation age, the course handbook and a small handy to use plotter. Electronic navigation is widely used with its increased reliability and the myths are explained.

There is a certificate issued at the completion of the course.

During the classroom teaching time there is an introduction to nautical terms and terminology. The wealth of information on a chart is unravelled along with an understanding of the symbols and abbreviations. Passage planning, pilotage and visual navigation with relation to both paper and electronic charts is discussed.

Some time is spent on the subject of safety, looking at the equipment carried, engine checks, as well as when to make prudent decisions ashore and afloat and the rudiments of planning a safe, enjoyable passage.
The basic international regulations for the prevention of collisions at sea, some meteorology, tides and tidal streams are also covered on this course.

The course can be used as a refresher for those who took courses some time ago or for those who would like to rebuild their confidence.

At Cowes Sailing School our classroom is situated to the west of Cowes with a commanding view of the western Solent. We offer tuition in small groups and often offer one to one tuition which enables the course to be run around the pressures of your work.
