This is a theory course for those who have already acquired the basics of navigation and seamanship. The level of knowledge required prior to starting the course is that of the Day Skipper theory shorebased course.

The theory knowledge acquired on this course is to the standard required for candidates of the Yachtmaster Offshore practical exam.

The theory course is based on 40 hours teaching time with three assessment papers at the end of the course which are designed to consolidate the learning. The RYA has spent much thought and preparation in designing course notes and a set of questions which the Instructor can use to aid teaching. There are a couple of charts to use which are situated in a fictional cruising ground along with a CD of a chart plotter to give some knowledge of electronic navigation.

There is a certificate issued at the completion of the course and assessment papers, which indicates that the holder has reached a suitable level of ability.

Methods of position fixing are considered in some detail to give the navigator a wide range of tools which when combined help to confirm the yachts position.

The various types of compass used afloat are studied along with the advantages and disadvantages of each. Tidal heights and secondary port tidal calculations are calculated as well as the use of tidal streams to aid navigation. Some theory on weather systems, as well as interpretation of shipping and other forecasts is an important part of this course.

Electronic aids to navigation are considered, their reliance discussed as well as the importance of particular aids.

Some time is spent on safety at sea, the recommended equipment, how it should be stowed and when used. A solid knowledge of the rule of the road goes a long way to keep the cautious navigator out of trouble.

Finally passage planning draws together all the navigation and meteorological information along with pilotage, buoyage, lights and chart work to give the informed navigator the best tools for the job of skippering an offshore yacht.

At Cowes Sailing School our classroom is situated to the west of Cowes with a commanding view of the western Solent. We offer tuition in small groups and often offer one to one tuition which enables the course to be run around the pressures of your work.
