Come and participate in racing in one of the world’s most prestigious events
Saturday 2nd to Friday 8th August 2007
“Bellerophon of Wight” is a Sigma 38 and partakes in Class racing, no handicaps to calculate, if you finish in front then you have won!
The racing takes place in the Solent, based from either the Royal Yacht Squadron starting line or from a Committee boat with a finish at the Royal Yacht Squadron.
The Sigma class races within class 6 for 7 days, from Saturday 2nd to Friday 8th August.
A typical day requires a departure from the berth by 0900 to enable the crew to familiarise themselves with the yacht and her running rigging whilst underway, safety briefing and introduction to racing having been carried out the previous evening. There should be time for a few tacks and gybes prior to the start of the race.
The length of the race will be determined by the weather conditions of the day, the aim being to be finished sometime between 1600 and 1800 hours which is the time limit, then a return to the berth in Cowes Yacht Haven.
“Bellerophon” is the only Sigma 38 with a permanent berth in Cowes Yacht Haven so there is no rushing to secure the best berths, we already have it!
Lunch is usually a selection of rolls, pies and fruit all able to be eaten whilst racing, however this is always a good excuse for the chocolate bars as a high energy supplement! Then on return to the berth there is time for tea and cake with a debrief of the day’s events. A chance to ask those technical questions or to have an explanation of a maneuver when it was inappropriate at the time to ask!
Once the debriefing is over then there is a chance to participate in some of the social events of the week. Many events require pre booking but many more are happening on the street or in the bars and the ambiance of a walk up the high street after a day afloat needs to be experienced to be appreciated.
