Day Skipper Shorebased Course
This is a theory course suitable for the complete beginner and those who have a sketchy knowledge of the rudiments of navigation and tides.
The course is a comprehensive introduction to navigation, chart work, metrology, tides and the basics of seamanship.
This is an ideal starting point for anyone wishing to learn the first rules about how to start making the safe decisions aboard a yacht.
The theory course is based on 40 hours teaching time with two assessment papers at the end of the course which are designed to consolidate the learning. The RYA has spent much thought and preparation in designing course notes and a set of questions which the Instructor can use to aid teaching. There are a couple of charts to use which are situated in a fictional cruising ground along with a CD of a chart plotter to give a taster into the electronic navigation age.
There is a certificate issued at the completion of the course and assessment papers, which indicates that the holder has reached a suitable level of ability.
During the classroom teaching time there is an introduction to nautical terms and terminology. The wealth of information on a chart is unravelled and how to understand the symbols and abbreviations. The Nautical Almanac and other publications are also introduced with the plotting instruments, the advantages and disadvantages of the various types are explained and a chance to try different types to decide which suits you best.
Some time is spent on the subject of safety, looking at the equipment carried as well as when to make prudent decisions ashore and afloat and the rudiments of planning a safe, enjoyable passage. What to do in emergency situations is discussed and how to cope when a fully crewed as well as short handed.
The basic international regulations for the prevention of collisions at sea, some meteorology, tides and tidal streams are also covered on this course.
At Cowes Sailing School our classroom is situated to the west of Cowes with a commanding view of the western Solent. We offer tuition in small groups and often offer one to one tuition which enables the course to be run around the pressures of your work.
